Today, citizens have the ability to use the internet to express themselves. Citizens of America take for granted the right that has been fought for them so many years back. Pretty simple idea, right? However, why is this rhetoric, for the lack of a better term, “taken for granted”? Especially here in the United States of America of today? Two simple words, Freedom of Speech the right that was given to the citizens of this nation by the architects of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and all the newspaper articles that took a stand against the British in the 1700s and 1800s. Liberty Rhetoric is used in speaking about the relationship between state and the citizen. In accordance, the rights given to citizens of today because of the Liberty rhetoric written in the documents of the forefathers, ability to practice Liberty rhetoric runs rampant. This rhetoric is now a given right to any citizen of the United States, which is taken for granted and it is the reason it is not too well known. For example, ever read an article on social media talking about how guns should be banned, or the bad effects illegal immigration has on the economy? These are all in some form Liberty Rhetoric, especially when the writers behind these are using techniques that influence the viewers in seeing their sides. Even today, with podcasts, different videos of specific views, and the vast use of articles about different topics of change are examples of Liberty Rhetoric. The affluent women who stood at podiums to speak about how they deserve just as much rights as their husbands, are another great example of Liberty Rhetoric. It is rhetoric that is seen in the writings of important documents used by our founding fathers to separate the new world from the British.

Many people in history during this time spoke and wrote to sway people to fight for their liberties and others. This rhetoric is significant because it helped people in the American Revolution to separate themselves as a “Citizen”, separated from the British rule. Put the two together and it produces the definition of “the tradition of speaking about the relationship between the state and citizen” (Lavender). Rhetoric is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as the art of speaking or writing effectively.

Let’s break it down, liberty, a simple word that brings a patriotic beating in the chests of American citizens. However, Liberty rhetoric might not be as well known, nor does it have ample research that can be easily found. Aristotle, Plato, Egyptian rhetoric, all of these could be considered the ancient rhetorics that make up the whole of today. Looking at the substantial amount of different rhetorics that have influenced the writings and speeches of today, people normally sway to the more basic of these. They helped to establish what is now known as the United States of America. From the American Revolution, Absolutism, and the Women's Rights Movement to the problems of today, Liberty Rhetoric can be seen in all of them. What a great name for something that includes a vast amount of history.
